This award category recognizes superior chocolate spreads. Many (but not all) of these spreads are paired with complimentary flavors ranging from the classic hazelnut to the wildly creative (think black tea, mezcal, or panela.)

Winning Criteria

Formulation

Our most heavily weighted criteria for this award. Our judges evaluate each spread on the freshness and quality of ingredients, optimal balance of components, flavor profile balance, and choice of chocolate/cacao.

Taste

Each spread is evaluated on its balance of chocolate and other flavors, fullness of taste, and the persistence of flavor.

Consistency

Spreads should demonstrate exceptional mouthfeel, be easily spreadable, and not be too stiff, dry, or fluid.

Execution

Our judges evaluate each spread’s texture and whether the spread demonstrates the optimal balance of components.
